A duel is a formal fight between two people, agreed to in advance and often following strict rules. It was usually a response to an insult, accusation, or a matter of personal honor.
Dueling has almost always been illegal in all times and places, but in spite of that duels were still fought, in fields, forests, or quiet gardens, by those who believed reputation mattered more than law. Enforcement varied by social class, opinions of local officials, among other things.
Each duelist brought a second, a trusted witness who helped arrange the terms, attempted to de-escalate the conflict before the duel could actually take place, confirmed the rules, and stood ready to stop the fight if honor had been satisfied.
In a few recorded cases, especially in the 18th century, men and women alike dueled with their chests exposed, not for spectacle, but to prevent hidden armor and to ensure that any wound would be immediately seen. These were rare, but real.
